Why Do Father Need to Create Transmutation Circle Again
- This article is about the character. For the episode, see Episode 28: Begetter (2009 series).
" | When you lot see an insect lying on the ground, do you terminate to consider it a fool? The life of an insect is so below yous that it would be a waste matter of your fourth dimension to even consider judging it. That would be an authentic summation of my feelings towards you lot humans. | " |
—Begetter |
The Dwarf in the Flask: Homunculus (
"Father" was created from the essence of the Centre (with some of Hohenheim's blood mixed in), and thus Male parent's shadowy actual form profoundly resembles the Middle. "Begetter" inherited much knowledge from the Middle, and, when it comes to corporeality, only those of the Centre and Truth exceed his knowledge.
Personality
" | I only wanted to obtain perfection. I wanted this world's noesis for my own. Why should I exist punished for that? What'due south wrong with craving cognition? What'southward incorrect with seeking perfection? | " |
—Father's goal |
Father'due south original personality when he was known equally the Dwarf in the Flask is more human-similar and beautifully charismatic than when compared to his afterward cocky. His later self is stated by Hohenheim to exist much more stoic, composed, almost lifeless, and near always looking bored, the reason being that he had supposedly purged himself of the seven vices (this "purging" seems to have been incomplete, since he acts in sinful manners that reverberate the seven vices).
For the well-nigh part, he is menacing, dark, and foreboding, though he can accept traces of humanity, equally, during his first meeting with the Elric brothers and Ling Yao, Begetter shows a somewhat comical, lighter side to his personality, similar to that of Hohenheim, simply about immediately after switches dorsum to his very serious demeanor. Although this change may take been due to the presence of his Greed inside him.
Father is also narcissistic, callous, merciless, pitiless, egotistical, megalomaniacal, deeply selfish, and believes that everyone around him are zero simply tools to exist used as part of his plans. The simply exceptions to this may be his vii Homunculi "children", equally Hohenheim had stated during their battle that ane of the reasons he had created them was because he wanted a family of his own, hence his title of Our Father, a fact which annoys him but which he as well does non deny. The Homunculi personalities vicariously reveal more about Father, since, as he tells Greed himself, they were built-in out of his own vices, besides equally the hidden emotions that drove them, and everything they feel he has felt himself. This is particularly true of Greed, Envy, and Pride. Greed'due south desire for possessions was actually an effort to escape the loneliness and desire for close friends he felt deep down, whilst Envy'due south grandiose hatred of humans covered up a deep-seated inferiority complex and envy of humans, peculiarly their sense of emotional intimacy, and Pride'due south great disdain of the human race covers a sure lack of self-reverence. These revelations suggest that deep down, part of what Father wanted to purge was his ain unbearable loneliness and jealousy that humans had each other for social, emotional, and physical back up whilst he was originally the only Homunculus on Earth. Since he could not be like or office of the human race, and since he feels done with the sickening social deprivation he suffered through for what he felt was as well long a time, he resolved to break free of the flask that prevented him from having physical contact with people, and to shun all the "burdensome" feelings he previously desired- longing for experiencing intimate physical and familial companionship with other people- as "inferior" by going for what he deems infinitely greater- the power to chaotically abolish the physical laws imposed upon everything.
His thirst for power seems to be the just thing more important to him other than himself, noted when he does not hesitate to carelessness his Homunculus "son" Pride in commutation for resupplying his Philosopher'due south Rock or to absorb Greed into his body to resupply information technology. Also, though he considers the Homunculi to be his children, he never expressed grief for any of their demises. Unlike Lust or Envy, Father has likewise stated that he feels no such hatred or antipathy towards humans. He confesses to Edward that he only sees humans equally aught more than stepping stones for himself, explaining his outright indifference and apathy towards them.
Despite his ordinarily calm, brooding personality, he is shown to be extremely excited when his plans finally come together, showing a wicked, gleefully evil side to his personality, as he was giggling with delight as the nationwide transmutation circle took effect. When outside of his human container and revealing his true form, he is often seen with a sadistic and homicidal grin.
Father claims that Truth (the consciences of alchemists) is a personal God, and since Father considers himself perfectly adept, he likewise thinks that God is on his side, and that by absorbing God, he becomes absolutely perfect. Father's extremely personal interpretations of Truth's works have a logical flaw, according to Edward Elric. Although he claims to have no emotions he actually does display them, sometimes equally seemingly friendly ditziness, simply also anger and peachy cruelty. If anything, it's more like his emotions are fairly depression primal. Hohenheim points out that while he claims to not desire a family, the fact that he created seven "children" and had them phone call him Male parent betray his motives.
Back when he had his original, mortal form in the flask, he had a much more than polite, charismatic, yet too somewhat sarcastic personality to him. "Full of human emotions", as Hohenheim notes, earlier he "purged" out his cardinal sins. When confronted by Hohenheim about this, Father reveals that the seven Homunculi were only created so he would become a perfect being. Ultimately, in his final moments, Begetter's motivation is revealed to exist freedom from the laws of the universe itself, and his dedication to his goals makes him all the more than menacing.
Appearance and Abilities
True Course
Initial
Begetter'south showtime form is a small round mass of black gas with a unmarried eye, a broad toothy mouth, and tendril-like arms, making him resemble the Center of Truth from inside the Gate (This might be considering Father was created from the entity's essence). He wasn't able to perform alchemy while within the flask, but was able to teach it to the people of Xerxes. He returns to this form later his defeat, beingness assimilated past the Eye of God before long after.
Evolved
During his boxing with Hohenheim, Hohenheim gains the upper hand in the boxing. Yet, after Father casts aside his "second form" husk and reveals his true form - which has evolved to exist able to exist exterior of his container - an unseen boxing takes identify between him and Hohenheim resulting in Father's victory. In this grade, Father is shown to accept a foreign, almost liquid-similar body structure somewhat resembling his ancient flask course. He is able to utilise abracadabra to reshape his own body for any situation. The almost mutual shape he took was that of a slightly obese humanoid with eyes with red irises adorning his blackness body and a wide grin on his otherwise nonexistent face.
While in this form, Father can have on a form identical to his son Pride's, though without the need for a container.
When Father absorbs around 50-meg souls from the people of Amestris, this form changes to become a giant cyclopean beingness. Though Father previously cryptically implied that this was his true form all along (though previously much smaller, only encapsulating Father's room) to discourage his sacrifices from escaping. This form is much thinner, showing what looks like a rib cage, a more muscular body, the multitude of eyes and wide grins that were on his previous class are gone, and he now has 1 large, bulging eye on his forehead.
Container
Due to his imitation of Hohenheim's body in Xerxes, Begetter's second form is a container which looks identical in appearance to Hohenheim, excluding hair and peel color, hairstyle, clothing, a few additional wrinkles, and a lack of glasses. Hohenheim has referred to this form as nil more a human-like husk that Father uses to hibernate his truthful advent. He is normally seen in the cavity beneath Central in which he and the Homunculi reside, sitting on a rock or cement throne with numerous pipes leading to information technology. The throne itself as well has a concrete connection to him, which tin exist unattached from him via pipes direct protruding from his spine. He uses the pipes to spread the Philosopher's Stone below the nation of Amestris. The purpose behind this is to act every bit a barrier between the tectonic energy of the earth's crust, where Amestrian Alchemy gets its free energy from, so that he tin can stop others from using Alchemy at any fourth dimension. Doing this, however, has aged his trunk slightly more than Van Hohenheim, who still looks identical from the fourth dimension of Xerxes. This procedure, however, tin can be countered by a "Opposite Transmutation Circle", which is a concept Scar's brother had figured out past combining Xingese Alkahestry and Alchemy practices. Alkahestry was unaffected by Father'south bulwark because Alkahestry uses energy from the World's chi instead, which allows Scar and Mei Chang to continue using their alchemy fifty-fifty when Father blocks Amestrian Alchemy.
Begetter's torso is created by and contains the Philosopher'southward Rock that came from half of the souls of the human population of Xerxes (nonetheless, he later gave parts of it to create the other Homunculi). Due to this, he is able to perform alchemy without cartoon a transmutation circle, clapping his hands together, or fifty-fifty moving at all. It is in this form that Father creates his seven sin Homunculus, gifting them with numerous powerful abilities such as the Ultimate Spear, Ultimate Shield, and Ultimate Heart. If he so wishes, he tin can render these Homunculi to his being by turning their Philosopher's Stone to liquid and drinking it.
Later absorbing God
Father's quaternary form looks much like a younger version of Hohenheim. Likewise, despite looking and then immature, he keeps the vocalisation of his second course. Due to the sacrifices, Father managed to blot the entity beyond the gate and now has the "ability of God" within him with the Amestrian souls he captivated keeping information technology in check, making him the "perfect being". He can now almost completely defy natural order (or, in Father's words, "do anything"). He tin can manipulate energy and matter to their total extent, turn anything into anything at any calibration and create any force at whatever magnitude.
He retains his fourth form and the powers that go with it fifty-fifty after having lost the Amestrians' souls, but as he lacks the strength to keep "God" inside his new body, the new power is also much of a strain on him, and every bit of affiliate 107, information technology renders him vulnerable to counterattack. Reflecting this, Male parent's appearance deteriorates as the fight goes on: his skin and hair losing their color, pronounced veins appearing across his body, and eventually his face up losing almost all human resemblance.
Affiliate 106 likewise revealed that Begetter at present has the ability to create bodies for the souls inside his Philosopher's stone. In the manga, these beings are non well-made however, and showtime to fall autonomously moments afterward they were created. Male parent used this ability to distract his enemies so he could unleash a devastating attack.
In what proves to be his downfall, Begetter re-absorbs Greed while in this form - gaining the Ultimate Shield ability, which Greed promptly uses to turn Father'southward body to graphite, allowing Edward to easily defeat him.
Role in the Story
While it is never fully explored, the being that would later telephone call itself Father was originally a part of the existence within the Gate. Using the blood of his slave Number 23, the Alchemist to the King of Xerxes managed to incorporate a small portion of the knowledge and life of the Gate within a flask, capable of existing in the physical realm. Named simply "Dwarf in the Flask" or "Homunculus" by the people of Xerxes, this sentient creature contained a vast amount of cognition, the most of import and influential existence the skills that would become standard alchemy.
The Dwarf in the Flask was unable to perform any alchemy of his own. Furthermore, though the flask was the only thing that keeps him live, Homunculus desired to exist outside it. To that end, he befriended Slave 23 out of similar circumstances as slaves to their respective plights, in plough naming the lad Van Hohenheim and educating him to win his freedom as an act of thanks for his mitt in creating him.
Still, Homunculus grew envious of the human race, jealous of their mutual emotional support for each other whilst he grew lonely, beingness only i of his kind. Losing sight of his ain unique, supreme, and special gifts and talents, Homunculus lost much of his self-conviction, and this low self-esteem caused him to fill himself upwards with hubris and a desire to become a being superior to even God himself.
Years later on, the Male monarch of Xerxes (who, like Begetter, has get vain and hubristic) finally revealed the use for Homunculus; he wanted to call upon him to give the secrets of immortality. Homunculus used this opportunity and instructed the king to construct a giant transmutation circle out of the kingdom, creating bloodshed at specific nodes of the circle. He and then manipulated the event and so he and Hohenheim were standing at the true center of the circle, then in one case information technology was activated, every soul in Xerxes besides himself and Hohenheim were sacrificed to make what was possibly the first Philosopher's Stone always created.
Homunculus used this power to open the Gate of Truth and created new, immortal bodies for himself and Hohenheim, living embodiments of the Philosopher's Stone with the hundreds of thousands of souls of Xerxes carve up between them every bit their power. Horrified at his office as an unwilling partner in this horrific human activity, Hohenheim parted ways with Homunculus.
After the destruction of Xerxes, Homunculus made his way to find another inhabited identify. Finding such a patch of state, he took the minor grouping of people thriving at that place and taught them alchemy, condign known every bit the "Philosopher of the East". However, to ensure his teachings would not be used against him, he placed himself nether what would get Central Command and used himself as a buffer confronting tectonic energy so alchemists would actually utilise energy derived from the souls of Xerxes independent within himself. At some point, he began using those aforementioned souls to create his Homunculi offspring and accordingly started going by the name "Father".
From this point, the people formed the powerful military machine state of Amestris, a puppet government secretly run by Father. Amestris begins to rise in power and annexes all nearby land, eventually branching out to form notwithstanding another giant transmutation circumvolve, with all skirmishes and bloodshed involving the Amestrian military machine taking place at the important nodes of the circumvolve. While Father's scheme was to repeat his actions at Xerxes to create another Philosopher'south Stone, he now requires an eclipse to become a "perfect being", ("the sun symbolizes a man, and the moon symbolizes a woman, when they come together they become a perfect beingness" -Edward Elric) and 5 alchemists that had opened the Gate every bit human sacrifices.
Throughout the first half of the story, Father is mostly seen sitting on a stone throne with many pipes leading into information technology. He is properly introduced when Wrath captures Greed and brings him to Male parent's surreptitious lair. Subsequently his offer to the Homunculus was turned down, Begetter had Greed boiled in a tub of liquid which decomposes his torso into his cadre Philosopher's Rock. The Rock, now in a liquid state and containing Greed's soul, is then consumed by Father.
Father'southward full identity is revealed when Gluttony brings Alphonse into the Homunculi'south lair, prior to Gluttony'south body tearing apart as Envy, Edward and Ling Yao sally from Gluttony'due south tummy. When the Elrics recognize his confront, Begetter admits his amazement that Edward and Alphonse are Hohenheim's children, earlier healing Edward'due south wounds and restoring Alphonse's missing arm. Having no use for Ling, nonetheless, Male parent orders Gluttony and Envy to kill him. Edward pleads for him to spare Ling, but Father makes it clear that he does not care for anyone not a part of his plan. Edward and Alphonse utilise their abracadabra to attack Father, with no avail; Begetter is entirely unharmed by their attacks earlier he just stomps his foot to seal off all alchemy in Central.
Withal, entering Begetter's lair at the same moment, Scar and May Chang astonish Father with their own counterattacks, unaffected by his alchemic lock-out with their ain unique forms of abracadabra. Nevertheless, even point-blank, Scar's abracadabra is unable to damage Father. Scar and May are overwhelmed while Envy captures the Elrics. Meanwhile, Father likewise easily defeats Ling then takes the liquefied rock, in which Greed is contained, and merges it with Ling, stating that he could have utilise for another pawn after all. Ling and then becomes the new Greed and Father has the Elrics taken to the surface earlier tending to the injured Gluttony. From there on, Male parent is more often than not seen sitting on his throne, musing over his program and conversing with the military high command.
The Promised Mean solar day
When the Promised Day begins, Edward, Hohenheim, Scar, Lan Fan and the Chimera invaded his lair with plans to kill him for adept by destroying his beat out. Nevertheless, merely Hohenheim manages to reach him every bit the two do battle. Merely when it seems Father has won when he manages to stab Hohenheim, he learns all likewise belatedly that Hohenheim managed to work with the souls within his Philosopher's Stone, some of which destroy his shell from the inside. Unfortunately, Father reveals to Hohenheim how far he has evolved since they parted means, emerging from his trounce and eating information technology with the Philosopher's Stones information technology still contained, before restarting the fight. He defeats Hohenheim, restraining him with his body and afterwards greets Izumi and the Elric brothers, who didn't recognize him at beginning. Soon after, Pride arrives with a blinded Colonel Mustang, giving Father his fifth and final human sacrifice.
Despite the alchemists' refusal to aid him, and Greed'due south attempt on his life, Begetter defeats his attackers and proceeds to finally activate the Nationwide Transmutation Circle around Amestris, using the restrained sacrifices' gates to access the World's gate while absorbing all of the Amestrians' souls. From there, in his full form, Begetter tears open the Gate of Truth with his blank hands; arresting the higher power he calls "God". Once the transmutation process is completed, in a new youthful body, Father states to the alchemists how he "imprisoned God" within his body and possesses all the knowledge and power of "God". No longer needing sacrifices, Father cancels Alchemy once more and prepares to dispose of the five sacrifices, as well as Greed and May, at his whim past creating a miniature sunday in the palm of his hand.
Last Battle and Defeat
However, Hohenheim reveals his own program: all the Xersesians souls that Hohenheim separated from his body and merged with the earth itself, using the moon'south shadow every bit a circumvolve, force Father to release the Amestrian souls and guide them back to their own bodies. Without the Amestrian souls, Begetter begins to lose command of "God" and his torso becomes riddled with pronounced veins due to the strain. Furious, Father claims that he can always create another Philosopher's Stone using a hundred million or even a billion lives, considering at that place are always more humans that he tin depict energy from and he attacks the group with formidable blasts of explosions, that Hohenheim manages to block. Not letting upwardly, Father launches a wave of free energy at his human foes, but May transmutes an alkahestric barrier around them all, declaring that her arts and crafts's specialty is harnessing the period of energy within the globe and that, the more energy is thrown at her, the more she is able to utilize. However, when Male parent fires another volley, Hohenheim moves quickly to block it with his easily, which burn and crumble as it becomes credible that he hasn't the energy necessary to compete with Father. Every bit he begins to fall dorsum, Ed and Al rush to his assist, holding him up so that he might keep up the fight and their grateful father redoubles his efforts, straining his Philosopher's Stone. Luckily, Scar activates the Alkahestric reverse-Nationwide Transmutation Circle, which nullifies Father's "buffer" and grants true alchemy to Amestrians. Ed, Al and Izumi keep their assault on Father and Hohenheim explains that they can win if they tin can force the Homunculus to utilise upwardly all the energy of his Philosopher's Stone. Greed emerges from the shadows to aid the fight, simply Father simply deflects all of their attacks and ascends toward the surface. Knowing that fighting the alchemists would only further weaken his ability to incorporate "God" within him, Father takes to the surface of Primal Command to claim the souls of the nearby Briggs soldiers and furnish his rock, but an assault from Hohenheim makes him lose concentration.
Now surrounded past Hohenheim, Izumi, Alphonse, and May, Male parent is asked past Hohenheim the reason why he hates humans by pointing out his origins and the reason that the Homunculi exist is because of Philosopher Stones, which are made from homo souls. Hohenheim asserts that Begetter is but capable of destruction and his evolution has reached a dead end. Begetter replies that he can create and proves Hohenheim wrong by resurrecting the Xerxesians with his body. Equally the alchemists recoil in horror as the Xerxesians wander nearly, grateful to have returned to the earth of the living, Edward finally makes his way to the surface. Seeing him, Begetter grins and releases some other energy blast which wipes out both the recreated Xerxesians and most of Primal Command. Nonetheless, Al and Hohenheim managed to shield everyone at great expanse to their concrete beings. Ed looks at the scorched trunk of his father and calls out to him, but as Hohenheim opens his eyes, Father appears backside him and swats him bated. Deciding on Izumi and Edward every bit his first targets, Begetter attempts to depict out their souls into a Philosopher's Stone, but is interrupted when the armed forces joins the fray with the blind Mustang, along with Lt. Riza Eagle supporting him, and Major Alex Louis Armstrong spearheading the attack.
The Briggs soldiers, pouring out from Cardinal Command, open burn on him with rifles, rockets and machine guns, giving the alchemists time to get to rubber. Begetter merely shrugs these attacks off, shielding himself with an impenetrable bulwark of alchemical energy, but the soldiers are ordered to stand clear as a deluge of flame washes over their inhuman foe; though Father is unharmed by the attack, Colonel Mustang, Major Armstrong and Lieutenant Eagle accept appeared on the scene. Hawkeye informs the blind Flame Alchemist that his aim was off and gives him targeting directions for his next massive salvo. As he claps his hands together to recoup for the impairment done to his Flame Alchemy gloves, Roy remarks that he hasn't yet gotten the hang of circumvolve-gratuitous transmutation and attacks Male parent with flames once more, just Begetter simply absorbs the flames and reflects them back at Mustang. With a alert from Hawkeye, Mustang rapidly transmutes a wall to defend against Father's counterattack and finds the clapping to exist useful. Unfortunately, even with everyone working together, Male parent remains unharmed and declares that the humans are incapable of penetrating his defenses. All of a sudden, Greed bursts from the deject of dust and gun smoke and delivers a dial right to his father's confront, exclaiming that a Homunculus might succeed where humans have failed, but as Father takes concur of Greed's hand, he thank you his son for delivering a complete Philosopher's Rock to him when he needed it nigh and begins draining Philosopher'southward Stone energy from his body. Still, Greed counters that he knew Father would driblet his guard in order to absorb a Stone and explains that his ain plan is to drain god free energy instead. Greed begins draining energy from his father'south torso, merely the Homunculus leader's pull is likewise strong and he reverses the flow. Seeing their comrade in danger, Edward, Alex and Izumi rush to Greed'due south aid, throwing a volley of concrete attacks. Overwhelmed by the multiple onslaught, Father pushes them all back with a wave of energy, shattering Edward'south automail arm in the process, but the alchemists remain unfazed and embark a 2d moving ridge. But when Father blocks a kicking from Edward with his arm instead of energy, Hohenheim realizes that the Homunculus is at his breaking indicate and can barely proceed God contained within his torso. Bulging and writing in agony as God's eye rises from his gullet and into his mouth, threatening to escape, Male parent topples to the basis and releases a huge burst of energy which throws anybody from his torso.
But managing to continue God within his form, Father searches desperately for a soul to brand into a Philosopher's Rock and sees the nearby Edward sprawled on a pile of broken concrete and desperately moves to take Fullmetal's soul to replenish his stone supply. Ed, seeing the danger as Father approaches him, attempts to scurry to condom, but finds that his left arm has been impaled on some twisted rebar jutting out of the rubble, pinning him to the spot. Ed, however, is saved by Al, who uses May's help to sacrifice himself in exchange for the return of Ed'south original right arm. A distraught Edward calls Alphonse an idiot before releasing himself from his pinned state and outset a furious avalanche of attacks confronting Father, greatly depleting Begetter's stone.
On the verge of defeat, Father reels in shock at being bested by a mere human. Some other stunning blow from Ed knocks the Homunculus downwardly for the count, only when the god energy makes another attempt to escape, Male parent sucks it up, rises to his feet and lunges desperately at Greed to take his Philosopher'south Rock from Ling'southward body. As he plunges his arm inside his son'southward stomach and begins draining his Rock away, Ling's consciousness grabs concord of Greed inside their shared trunk, refusing to permit him go, but as Greed states, Father'south pull is stronger and any connected struggle volition only result in Ling'south soul being pulled into Male parent as well. When Ling asserts that he needs Greed'due south power in club to become Emperor of Xing, Greed claims to take partnering with the prince for the throne, but knocks him abroad at the concluding second, resigning himself to his male parent'southward summons. Equally the avaricious Homunculus declares that this was the but lie he has ever told, he informs Ling that he can still become emperor, as Lan Fan holds the Philosopher'southward Stone that she took from Wrath's pocket. Drawing out his son's Rock, Father's arm turns slowly grayness as he absorbs Greed's carbon armor power, but with his last moments in the prince's body, Greed summons Lan Fan to his side and she slices off Father's arm with a simple swipe of her kunai. Ling collapses to the ground, restored to complete humanity as the Ouroboros on his manus fades away, while Father howls piteously at his own son's treachery. Though his entire trunk slowly morphs to carbon via Greed's power, the avaricious Homunculus explains from inside that he has used his armor ability to transform Begetter's anatomy to one comprised of the weakest, most frail class of carbon imaginable and his entire being begins to crumble under its own weight. Enraged that his own son would rebel against him to the end, Begetter destroys Greed'south soul. Yet, ensuring Greed's death was non in vain, Edward uses this opportunity to dial a pigsty through Father's chest, through which the remaining Xerxesian Souls of his Philosopher's Stone escape. With no power or souls left to contain "God" or to sustain his concrete being, Father is horrified as "God" emerges from his body and grabs him. Father laments the harshness of reality, crying out that he does not understand why reality does non permit him to go his greatest desires, and why freedom seems so impossible to achieve; soon his body disintegrates.
Male parent, at present in his original grade, appears earlier the Gate and asks God why he was not accepted as its vessel, and gets a reply: "It'due south because you lot did not believe in yourself." When Begetter searches for the origin of the voice, encountering the Truth, yet unaware of Truth's identity as information technology berates Father for trying to have the power of someone greater than him. Father claims that he wanted all the knowledge in the world and that he wanted to know what God knew. He so goes on to ask what was wrong with wanting, wishing and chasing your desires, showing the humanity he tried to purge himself of. Truth mocks him, proverb that taking the ability of God didn't make him God, only rather a cunning thief. Demanding to know who he is speaking to, Father is horrified when Truth formally introduces itself and states itself equally the Truth as he defines it: giving despair to discourage i from becoming boastful and proud. Truth tells Father that he'll receive his most plumbing fixtures despair as the Gates open up up and hands appear to grab Father. Father begins crying as he desperately asks what he did wrong to deserve this and where he went wrong, showing the flaws he tried to purge himself of. Ultimately, stripped of the freedom he cherished, Father is sucked into the Gate and once again becomes part of the endless abyss inside.
Relationships
- Homunculi (Childrens): Father expects undying loyalty from his Homunculi children and melts the first Greed down into a Philosopher's Stone every bit punishment for betraying him and doing things on his own terms, but his definition of "loyalty" is essentially 1-sided blind obedience; he does not return the Homunculi's loyalty at all. This is proven about the end of the series, where Father does not hesitate to abandon Pride to escape to the surface in an endeavor to create new Philosopher'southward Stones, subsequently the latter is left in a critically vulnerable state from using the souls in his own Philosopher's Stone to forcefulness Mustang through the Gate of Truth. As Ed points out and as Pride realizes for himself, this proves Begetter demands complete "loyalty" (read: obedience) while giving none in return.

Trivia
- Father's original flask-bound form was most likely inspired by existent-life concepts of Homunculi. Supposedly, if an alchemist was successful in creating such a beingness, he was to keep information technology inside of a drinking glass flask for a certain period of fourth dimension, equally information technology would dice in its "infancy" stage outside of it. Father's evolved multi-eyed and multi-mouthed form and its giant incarnation could be a play on the "Homunculus argument" fallacy.
- Both Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood and the latter half of the manga of Soul Eater were developed by Studio Basic, inspiring several new characters in the series, one of which being Table of Contents, a mysterious character that has numerous similarities to Father, acting equally the leader of a grouping of characters based on the seven mortiferous sins, and was created by another character infatuated with the path of knowledge.
- Begetter and Envy from the 2003 anime share several similarities, as both have some sort of previous affiliation with Hohenheim, being created by him. The two were considered the first Homunculi in their corresponding storylines, being approximately 400 years former. Information technology is too interesting to notation that Green-eyed'due south original class resembles Father's quaternary class, with both looking like younger versions of Hohenheim.
- Though it'due south stated numerous times that Father has expelled all of his sins, information technology's interesting to note he acts in a manner like to that of the sins: He desires for becoming a perfect being (Lust); devours souls with no self-control (Gluttony); seeks ability at all costs (Greed); prefers to let others do his bidding for him while existence incredibly incompetent and doing piddling to nothing to further his ain goals over hundreds of years (Sloth); feels anger towards any opposition, principally Hohenheim (Wrath); has a want for a family unit like humans (Envy); views humans as "ants" (Pride). However, given the general vagueness of these behaviors, equally well as his dispassionate demeanor compared to both prior to the creation of and after the expiry of the homunculi, seems to imply that he did get himself purged of his sins.
- Indeed, the process of rejecting his sins is hinted by the Truth to be the reason for his malevolence.
- He'southward told Greed that anything he wanted was desired by him showtime, meaning that Greed's desire for friends was something Begetter desired but expelled because he thought information technology was a weakness.
- His largely prideful-seeming nature may be a reference to pride beingness the "father of all sins", though information technology'southward easy to argue that his biggest sin is sloth rather than pride.
- Despite desperate for souls to replenish his Philosopher'due south Stone when the Amestrians souls were taken from him, Begetter completely ignores Pride (who had both the Philosopher'southward Stones of Gluttony and Kimblee within him forth with his own.) Information technology's possible he spared Pride to purchase him time to escape.
- Information technology is also possible that the forced Human Transmutation had made Pride'south (and those who were inside him) Philosopher's Stones unstable.
- When Begetter succeeded in opening the Gate, he emerged from the basis in a much larger class of himself. This massive class of Male parent is exactly the aforementioned as his previous form nevertheless his body is slightly altered. He is much thinner, showing what looks like a rib cage, a more muscular trunk, the multitude of eyes and wide grins that were on his previous class are gone, and he now has one large, bulging centre on his forehead.
- Father'south epitome bears a striking resemblance with the epitome concept of God as an old human being with robes in multiple religions. Ironically, the nature and symbolism of his origin, methods, and goals actually make him the closest analog the Fullmetal Alchemist franchise has to Satan. Dr. Tim Marcoh referring to the Philosopher's Stone as "the Devil'due south inquiry" is found to hint at this when information technology turns out that Father is responsible for the first stones always created and seeks to achieve "godhood" by further powering his own stone with souls.
- Begetter's voice actor in both the Japanese and English version also narrates the 2009 anime. They can be heard previewing the adjacent episode and at the kickoff of the commencement few episodes where they briefly explain the concept of alchemy to the viewers.
- One time revealed as the narrator, he speaks in much more scornful and condescending phrases when giving the preview.
- Father's English language voice actor also voiced Majhal from the 2003 anime.
- In the 2009 anime, before Father gets sucked back to the Gate (while in his fourth advent), he loses both of his artillery (the other arm was lost when he destroyed Greed), unlike in the manga where he only loses one arm and one leg, ironically mirroring what happened to Ed at the offset of the story.
- Father is the graphic symbol with the greatest corporeality of changes in terms of increasing his own capacities, due to his numerous transformations.
- In the original Japanese version of Alliance, when Father is in his "former man" form, he sounds like he'due south struggling to pronounce certain words, and talks at a very deadening pace, when he's in his original class, he speaks much more fluently.
- Truth'due south ultimate punishment for Begetter seems poetic: by letting the Eye of God drag him back into the Eye, they permit Father become as high as God in some senses whilst stripping Male parent completely of the freedom he cherished.
- In the manga, Father'due south eyes in his 4th form are dark purple and, similar those of Envy, Lust and Greed, have slit pupils. In the 2009 anime, they are gilded with round pupils like Edward's, possibly to further imitate Hohenheim'southward advent. Also, Father's quaternary appearance wears sandals in the manga whereas in the anime he appears barefoot.
- Before meeting the Elric brothers for the outset time, Father and Hohenheim's actions are coordinated very specifically to match up in the manga, leaving information technology ambiguous if he and Hohenheim are indeed the same person. Despite basing itself wholly on the manga, the 2009 anime does not include any of these scenes.
- When Begetter is sucked back into the Gate, it could almost be seen every bit comical that such a tiny fauna was responsible for the entire plot of the story.
- Since each of the Homunculi he created were partially made of his soul in an attempt to cleanse himself of his sins, a part of him is still alive due to Pride never beingness fully destroyed.
- This could possibly hint that Father may exist able to possibly be reborn or recreated through Pride. Though considering he was banished back into the Gate from where he originated, it is unclear if this could actually happen.
- The Gate that Father appears in front of is completely blank.
- This could perhaps signify that a Homunculus can't use abracadabra normally.
- Considering the gate seems to portray a different alchemic symbol (such as Mustang's transmutation circle) betwixt alchemists, information technology may as well be seen to represent Father's status as a being originating from the gate itself.
- The gate could also represent real power or wisdom gained, equally Truth stated that Male parent "stole his power from others", thus Male parent's gate existence blank could also signify that he neither had whatsoever existent power outside of his stolen souls nor ever learned anything.
- He has many name like Father, Homunculus, Dwarf in the Flask, The Philosopher of the East.
- In Brotherhood, he keeps his "elderly man" voice fifty-fifty subsequently transforming into his younger course.
- In Chapter 104, after Father absorbs God, he ends up looking similar a shirtless, teenage Hohenheim and spends the side by side several capacity in that form. He chop-chop turns into Fan Disservice after Hohenheim'south countermeasure strips him of the souls needed to comfortably incorporate his new power, causing unsightly, jutting veins to popular all over his body.
- When confronted by Truth after the last battle, Truth calls him such for not being able to truly empathize the world and humans despite having not only the ability to exercise then, simply the time also. Essentially, he never developed past being the Dwarf in the Flask in his mindset, something Hohenheim realizes prior and calls him out on. This is illustrated in his Gate of Truth: whereas every other Gate of Truth shown in the series has ornate designs on the door symbolizing what they know of Alchemy and the world, Male parent is the just ane who has bare doors.
